Meet Gil — a dedicated optometrist working at the hospital in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste. Beyond his daily work, Gil selflessly travels to remote villages, offering free eye care to those who would otherwise go without. He’s not just an optometrist — he’s a lifeline to better vision for countless children and adults.
Right now, Gil faces a huge challenge: while he can test eyesight, providing the right glasses is often impossible. Prescription lenses must be made in Java, with wait times of 4–6 months. In the meantime, we’ve been doing what we can — shipping second-hand glasses donated by the Lions Club of Australia twice a year. But it's not enough.
To truly transform lives, Gil needs better tools. He has recommended the NIDEK ME 1500 Multifunction Edger to cut and fit lenses locally (estimated cost of $80,000 AUD).
He’s also asking for portable eye testing equipment so he can continue his free outreach work in hard-to-reach communities. Gil’s vision doesn’t stop there — he dreams of opening his own clinic near the hospital to meet the growing need for eye care in his country.
This is where you can help. Whether you can donate funds, share contacts who might offer equipment discounts, or know of second-hand optometry equipment (like an edger or testing gear) — every bit counts.
Timor-Leste is a young country still healing from the impact of war. Life is tough, especially in rural areas, but the people are incredibly kind, strong, and hopeful for a better future.T
They don’t ask for much — just a chance to see clearly, to learn, to work, and to live full lives. Right now, something as simple as a pair of glasses can make a world of difference.
Please consider supporting Gil and the people of Timor-Leste. Your kindness can bring clear vision — and a brighter future.
